Reviews: The positive & negatives // Blog #8

Negative Review:
1.) www.vulture.com/m/2014/10/movie-review-the-best-of-me.html
2.) This review is on the movie, "Best of Me".
3.) The attitude of this reviewer is displeased with the movie.
4.) The reviewer states that the young version and the older version of the lead male character do not resemble each other at all. Also, they believe the movie was rushed at the end.
5.) I disagreed with the reviewer because I loved this movie. Although the main characters young and old self did not look alike, I felt as if they did a great job playing the character anyway. Also I do not think the ending was rushed at all.

Positive Review:
1.) www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-et-ms-one-direction-four-review-20141118-story.html
2.) This review is on One Directions new album, "Four".
3.) The reviewer was pleased with the boys new album.
4.) The reviewer notes similarities between songs on the new album to previous well-known bands. Also, the reviewer notes hoe much the sound has matured and changed since their start.
5.) I agree with the reviewer because I throughly enjoy One Direction, their music, and especially their new album.

Cartoon vs. Editorial // Blog #7

1.) The cartoon i found was about gay marriage and how gay people still aren't getting a say in their marriage. My editorial is about how the supreme court is slowly getting closer to allowing same-sex marriage in all states.
2.) In the cartoon, it shows a form for someone's wedding day and how if the person getting married is straight, everything is easy, but if the person is gay, it takes a lot more steps to actually get married. I believe both the cartoonish/author want same-sex marriage to be legal everywhere in America.
3.) They are both alike because they both talk about how complicated it is for gay people to get married. They are different because the editorial talks about how some states are ignoring appeals from other court rulings.
4.) I believe the cartoon is more effective because it's straight to the point and gives a clear messages about how complicated gay marriage is due to the ban in certain states.
5.) A variety of people are able to understand pictures better than editorials and vise versa. I believe cartoons allow more creativity in the topic, but also editorials can give more information about a situation than a picture can.

Nurse without Ebola in quarantine

Many doctors and nurses have been sent to Africa to help patients suffering with Ebola, Kaci Hickox is one of them. Hickok treated patients with Ebola in Sierra Leone with Doctors Without Borders. Although she tested negative for Ebola, she was put in quarantine.
Above are two doctors checking up and feeding a young Ebola patient.

Over the 21-day quarantine, Hickox had been fighting against the state of New Jersey and officials. She believes that this was cruel to do to her since she did not have Ebola.
Northwestern's school nurse, Mrs. Van Gelder, believed that the 21-day quarantine is a good safety precaution to help prevent Ebola from spreading. Mrs. Van Gelder also, "Bring patients to America is a very big danger to everyone else and it's just going to get worse." Lastly, Mrs. Van Gelder believes that in order to prevent Ebola from spreading, large precautions, such as the one taken to Hickox, are crucial for the safety of others.
Kaci Hickox is the young nurse that was put in quarantine even after testing negative for the tragic virus.

A Day at Disney

Jada Davis and her friends, Graycen Hensley, Allana Mutuc, and Julianne League, take a silly picture before enduring their long 8 hour drive to Florida for spring break.
The four best friends pose for the camera at their hotel in Orlando, Florida.

Davis and her friends take a picture in front of one of  Walt Disney World's most famous rides, Expedition Everest.

Animal Kingdom is an African inspired theme park among the four in Walt Disney World.

Minerva Mouse is actually the real name of the famous Disney character, Minnie Mouse!

The Sorcerer Mickey Hat, pictured above, was built in 2001 for the 100th celebration of Walt Disney.

Disney World is known for having the largest fixed-based firework shows.

One Davis and the girls arrived at Magic Kingdom, Davis quickly snapped a shot of the iconic castle.

The four girls hold hands while making their way to the last ride before it was time to leave.

Summer Events // Blog #4

On July 17th, a Malaysian Airlines jet flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down and crashed in Ukraine. The plane was shot down over pro-Russian held territory. There were 298 people aboard the plane and zero survivors. There has been lots of dispute over who is held responsible for shooting down the plane, and there has been a 30 million dollar reward for anyone that can prove who shot down the plane with evidence. Neither the Russian nor Ukraine government will take responsibility for the crash and continue to blame one another for the tragedy. All we can continue to do now is hope that officials can find out who is the reason for this and put the families of the lost passengers at ease. This event is newsworthy because it was a potential terrorist attack and many people died.

Ebola first broke out in Guinea around December of 2013, and spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal throughout the month. Since none of those countries have the medical resources to save the American patients, two were sent back to America this summer to be treated. Over the summer many people were becoming very frightened because of the patients with Ebola coming to America, in fear that it would infect the country. Thankfully there has been no reports of any breakouts yet. This event is newsworthy because it takes place in our country and effected our people.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was the biggest trend this summer. Participants dump a bucket of ice water onto themselves and nominate people to do the challenge within 24 hours or make a donation to the association. Tons of celebrities and people were doing it and nominating their friends, while also donating to the cause! The ALS Association said that they have raised over $15 million dollars since July 29th. This event is newsworthy because everyone was doing it all around the world at the same time.

On August 9th, 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson by a police officer. Many say that Brown was surrendering to the police officer when he was shot, others say that Brown attacked the police officer. This caused an uprising in the town  and many proclaimed that Brown was murdered and that since the shooter was a while male police office, he would get away with it. The town has refused to rest until justice is served for Brown. This topic is newsworthy because many believe this was an act of racism and it caught the attention of many Americans.

On August 26th, Israel and Hamas finally agree to a truce that has no set expiration date. They have been fighting for over two months, and have broken previous ceasefires. During the summer there have been many bombing and attacks between the two over Gaza. The truce is not promising anything long term, since there are many unresolved issues. Therefore, Israel agreed to open boarder crossing and ease the blockade on Gaza. This event is newsworthy because the U.S. military had been trying to help the people in Gaza.

Davis Family Takes on Carnival Legend and the Western Caribbean

On Jul. 12, Jada Davis and her family drove down to Tampa, Florida for a cruise on the Carnival Legend to the Western Caribbean.

Davis and her family stayed at a hotel the night before and left the next morning to board the ship. They got to their cabin, explored the ship, and watched the shows that night. Their next day was at sea and that's when they tried all the different cuisines and foods the ship had to offer. The third day Davis and her family arrived at the first port which was Cozumel, Mexico. They took a taxi to one of the smaller beaches called Playa Palancab and spent the day there. They visited Belize on the fourth day, where they toured the city and did some shopping. Their third port, on the fifth day, was Mahogany Bay, Roatan. There they spent the day at the beach and did some more shopping. On the sixth day they visited their fourth port, the Grand Cayman Islands. There they went swimming with stingrays and did some snorkeling! Davis and her family spent the last day at sea and enjoyed all the ship's activities and amenities before they had to go home the next morning. They safely arrived back in Tampa on Jul. 20 and drove home. "I visited some of the most beautiful places I've ever been to this week and I wish it didn't go by so fast." says Davis, as she reminisced on her cruise with hopes to visit the Western Caribbean again.
